Gravity Falls Creators Confirm No Sequel Series is in The Works

Gravity Falls isn’t just a fictional locale in the Pacific Northwest, it’s a Disney animated series that has forged a legacy that won’t soon be forgotten. In 2016, the final episode was released that saw the likes of Dipper, Mabel, Grunkle Stan, and the employees of the Mystery Shack bid a fond farewell to their audience. With many hoping to see an eventual sequel series to expand on this universe, Gravity Falls creators have some bad news on this front when it comes to the Pines’ prospective comeback.
To hype up the recent release of the artbook, The Art of Gravity Falls, we here at Canon Break had the opportunity to chat with the show’s creators, Alex Hirsch and Rob Renzetti on both the history of the show and a potential sequel. Unfortunately for fans, Renzetti was quick to shoot down the idea that we would see a Gravity Falls 2 any time soon. “Revisiting the universe is one thing and we’re always up to do that. As far as a ‘season three’ of Gravity Falls, Alex’s answer is still ‘no’ and it makes sense why the answer is still ‘no.’ We wanted the show to be wrapped up and we wanted its story to just be over one summer.”
Gravity Falls is Finished
Renzetti didn’t entirely shoot down the idea of a new animated project erupting from Gravity Falls into the future however, “If there is another way to explore this universe in the future, I’m always up for it. I love working with Alex and I love these characters. I think as far as the ‘legendary season three,’ I don’t think anyone should hold their breath for that!”
Hirsch also added his thoughts on the idea of returning for a third season over a decade since the original finale, “We love these characters. Our fans are millions of our little nieces and nephews, but as the Grunkle to all these nieces and nephews, I love to show up every now and again to give them a fun little toy. It’s a way to say, ‘sorry I’ve been gone for so long.’ I am an uncle though, I’m not a dad! It feels really good to pop out of nowhere to say ‘here’s a Book of Bill’ and ‘here’s an Art of Gravity Falls,’ so when is appropriate, I’m always looking for ways to give back to our fans, but I think one of the reasons the show has so much longevity is that it was a satisfying and successful finale. There aren’t a lot of those and I think you can see right now, a lot of folks in media trying to turn everything into a trillion sequels and cinematic universes.”
Renzetti hilariously added, “Stop creating sequels to everything! Come up with something original!” With the Art of Gravity Falls, which you can buy here, Gravity Falls’ co-creators certainly have done just that.
